All options needed to keep the lights on

TORONTO -  Today’s report from the Ontario Power Authority provides a solid framework for Ontario’s energy future – providing for more conservation and maintaining the important role of nuclear power.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce is pleased with the continued emphasis on nuclear generation, including new capacity. Nuclear energy is fundamental to Ontario’s supply, providing reliable and clean power.

“Just like investing for retirement, investments in our energy supply must take a balanced approach,” said Len Crispino, President and CEO of the OCC. “We need nuclear, wind, cleaner coal, natural gas and hydro capacity to ensure we have the energy we need to grow our economy.”

The OCC remains concerned that this report shows Ontario’s power supply will remain very tight over the next twenty years, and suggests that the government take this opportunity to consider all its options to increase that supply and relieve the pressure on the system.

“With future supply numbers being so tight, we believe that by refurbishing existing coal plants, substantial improvements will be seen in air-quality, while providing much needed generating capacity and certainty,” says Crispino.

The OCC looks forward to continuing to work with government to find the right supply mix, using today’s report as a solid and positive framework.

“Our goal is an abundant, cost-effective, environmentally sustainable energy supply,” said Crispino. “We believe this is an achievable goal – worthy of Canada’s most innovative province.”

The OCC represents over 60,000 businesses through 160 local Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade, and has been the business advocate of choice since 1911. Its advocacy and policy initiatives focus on six areas key to the economic well-being of the province: health; education; energy; finance & taxation; transportation & infrastructure; and border issues.
