TORONTO: The Ontario Chamber of Commerce is dismayed by the news that the Ontario government has been unable to identify an acceptable proposal for new nuclear generation facilities in the province through its competitive bidding process, but reassured that the government remains committed to modernizing our nuclear generation facilities.
“New nuclear generation is vital for this province as we look for clean, safe, reliable and cost-effective electricity while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels,” explains Len Crispino, President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. “The suspension of the competitive process to choose a supplier for two new nuclear reactors is regrettable, but we remain hopeful that a satisfactory proposal can soon be procured.”
While recognizing the importance of energy diversity and pursuing such things as renewable energy sources and reduced consumption, nuclear should remain at least fifty percent of the electricity mix in Ontario.
