New Ontario air quality control standards take effect

Ontario  has introduced new air quality standards that effect a wide range of industries.

As of February 1,  industrial facilities are mandated to meet stronger standards for 33 contaminants. Industries in the pulp and paper, petroleum and chemical industries are among the sectors covered by the new regulation.

Ontario currently has air standards for 124 substances and guidelines for over 200 contaminants. In addition, proposed standards for eight additional substances are currently undergoing consultation and will be announced later this year by the provincial government.

The Ontario business community has been assuming an increasingly larger stewardship role on environmental issues. The OCC endorses government’s efforts to pursue a cleaner and sustainable environment for future generations. Yet, it is extremely important to business that the Ontario avoid regulations and compliance options that overlap, duplicate, or introduce inconsistencies that increase the compliance burden on industry.

The OCC has advocated for realistic and reasonable timetables for the implementation of science-based actions directed to improving air quality. In addition, the OCC continues to advocate for changes which will produce the least economic impact on regulated industries.

The OCC will continue to monitor these developments on its members’ behalf and advocate to ensure that business is made aware and widely consulted. For more information on the air quality standards, contact Frank Belluardo, Policy Analyst, frankbelluardo@occ.on.ca, or (416) 482-5222 ext 247.
