The Ontario Chamber of Commerce

Regulation

Government regulations are required to prevent market outcomes that can have a negative effect on workers, the public, and the environment. However, in addition to social and environmental objectives, sustainable regulations must also take into account the impact of government intervention on business competitiveness and the economy.

In too many instances government regulation in Ontario does not meet this basic requirement for sustainability. As a result, many businesses have closed their doors or decided not to invest in the province, which decreases jobs, government revenue, and the standard of living for all Ontarians.

Our Goal

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) does not believe that deregulation is the answer. In order to make Ontario the best possible place to live, the OCC believes the government must adopt a sustainable approach to regulation which contributes to the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit.

Ontario’s businesses support smart regulation both in principle, and through demonstrating responsible corporate citizenship in their industries.

Our Position

Moving towards a sustainable approach to regulation, the OCC encourages the government of Ontario to commit to four broad courses of action:

  • Streamlining approval and compliance procedures
  • Adopting a consultative and evidence-based approach
  • Putting in place safeguards for quality, accountability and transparency
  • Supporting outcomes-based and voluntary models of regulation
